Plans for Washington - Connecticut Spring Excursion

Planned Route

       Last year the MBC had a spring excursion ride from Pittsburgh to Washington DC.  This spring I thought we plan to continue that trip to Connecticut, eventually making a third excursion along USBR7 to completing the journey from Pittsburgh to Montreal.

Day 1 Montreal to St Albans VT.  I suggest we set out to St Jean sur Richeleau via the exo train to Candiac as was done on the fixture ride 30 August 2018.  We then head south to the US border and overnight in St Albans

Day 2 Take the Vermonter Amtrak train to Washington DC.   It leaves St Albans at 9:15 am and gets to Washington by 10 pm.  The train allows a maximum of 3 regular size bicycles as carry on items.  There is no baggage car for boxed bicycles.  Because of the limited allowed, I will be using a folding bicycle on this excursion. Others may consider renting a similar bike from Duomoulin.

Day 3 Two alternate routes are listed for getting to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. (Shuttle service required)

Day 4   Delmarva Penisula to Lewis and Delaware Bay ferry.

Day 5 Atlantic City.   A long detour inland is required to bike between Atlantic City and Toms River.  It may be possible to arrange for boat transport along a portion of the Intracoastal Waterway and bicycle along the nearby islands.  Further investigation is required.

Day 6  Toms River.  The path north along the sea to Sandy Hook is described here.

Day 7 Sandy Hook  From nearby Highlands NJ there is a ferry to Manhattan

Day 8  Manhattan. Cross the Brooklyn Bridge and continue on to Port Jefferson.

Day 9 Take the ferry from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport CT. Return to St Albans VT on the Amtrak Vermonter to St Albans.

Day 10 Bike back to Montreal.
