To the Rapids!

Recently I was lucky enough to participate in a trishaw outing to the Parc des Rapides, courtesy of Malcolm McRae and Roger Jochym of the Montreal bicycle Club.

The trishaw accommodates two passengers at the front, the pedal power being supplied by a cyclist at the back.  I sat in front with one small grandchild aged 3 while two other grandchildren (5 and 7) rode their own bicycles under the supervision of the other adult.

We rode all the way to the Lachine rapids, a total of 23 kms, a short distance on major roads but most on bicycle paths and had the wonderful experience of an unimpeded view just like regular cyclists.  The trip was surprisingly comfortable as the trishaw is well-padded but the odd small bumpy patch can be accommodated with a small extra cushion at the back for those like me with back problems. We felt perfectly safe at all times.

We visited the rapids and returned via Wellington St. in Verdun, a new experience for me as I had no idea the street had such a great atmosphere and ambiance, with a variety of cafés and restaurants and lots of attractive outdoor space for strolling and sitting.  Would have loved to stop for lunch but we didn't have time.

It was an exhilarating ride experience for all of us and I see the future for this initiative particularly for multigenerational families where a couple of people who don't, or no longer bicycle, can accompany other family members including children, on outings that would not have been accessible to them before.

Thank you Malcolm and Roger.  Great initiative!
