New U de M campus

MBC Minute Book October 2019

The New Université de Montréal campus was visited as part of the  Miron Quarry  Fixture ride, October 20 2019.  A report on this was written by H.S. Tibbs.

The new UdeM campus in Outremont is located on former railroad yards.  The name of the campus is MIL which is derived from "milieu" since the site is near the centre of the island of Montreal and at the crossroads of four of its boroughs and one city.   It is connected to the Acadie métro station by a well designed walking bridge.  It is so positioned as to give a dramatic view of the eastern end of Mont Royal as crosses it.   There will be 200 or so professors and researchers and 2,000 students in the departments of chemistry, physics, geography and biological sciences.   A special emphasis has been  established for artificial intelligence with one of the leaders in the field, Yoshua Bengio, most noted for his work on artificial neural networks and deep learning.  It is also connected to the Google Brain Team.   Initial planning for the campus was directed by Provencher Roy architects.   When completed it will have 20 major buildings.  Even more exciting is the long range planning whereby it will be connected by greenways to the present UdeM campus and the new BlueBonnets sustainable housing development.
