September 17, 2021 - St. Jean-sur-Richelieu

This outing was a reprise of the July 5th outing. A.T, Lane was unable to attend so Anne became our navigator!

Karl Kron, Louis Rubenstein, Dorothy Cole, Anne and Jim boarded the train at Vendôme Station en route  to Candiac where we would begin our journey to St. Jean and the Chambly Canal.

It was great to have Karl along for this long ride. He was in fine form.

With  our trusty steeds safely stowed we settled for the train ride.

From Candiac Station we found our way out through farmland  (the corn was as high as an elephant's eye! ) to l' Acadie and a splendid church.

The park in front of the church was a perfect spot for our first rest.

After perambulating through the outskirts of St. Jean, the Chambly Canal finally appeared and we stopped for a proper lunch on its shady shores.

There was activity to entertain us in the locks along the canal

The locksman impressed us with his strength

A cyclist noticed our confusion as we tried to find the route to Montreal from the Chambly Basin and very graciously led us to the Route Verte #1.

As usual, a bridge discussion ensued. Since the planned route was over the Jacques-Cartier Bridge and Dorothy assured everyone it was the shorter route the group proceeded together to Île-Ste-Hélène.

Addendum by Louis Rubenstein: This pic with Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in the background explains the difficulty in finding the way through the endless corn fields on the way to the Chambly canal: the three are accustomed to travelling at night with only a star to guide them.

The three wise men and two  ladies arrived home after a satisfying ride of 91 kms ably assisted by Anne's efficient map reading skills.
