5 July Hurtigruten Life on board ship - Hammerfest -Tromsø

Settling into life on board, we were excited to find that it was possible to do our own laundry.

We spent time viewing the scenery.

The Hurtigruten ships make many stops along the coast picking up and letting off passengers. At each of these quick stops we could get off and walk about the dock before getting back on the ship.

The daily arrival of the Hurtigruten ship is a bit of an event at many small ports.

Whenever a Northbound and Southbound Hurtigruten ship pass each other, the passengers wave and the ships blow horns.

Mostly the passengers just read and relax.

Hammerfest has a large LNG plant that the guides discussed while on board.

The town was once visited by a polar bear, and this has become the local symbol.

They also have a Meridian Column that commemorates a 19th century detailed survey of the curvature of the earth.  The guide, with a pirate flag in hand,  gave a talk about this.

At the end of the day, we came to Tromsø and went to a church midnight concert.
