Tibbs Down By the River / Tibbs à la rivière

     Tibbs cycled down to the river Friday after sunset.   He began by crossing over to Nun's Island.   He then took the estacade cycling bridge to the St Lawrence Seaway.   There he was disappointed.   The route along the seaway to the St Lambert locks was blocked for construction.   He turned westwards instead and cycled a few kilometers along the road in complete darkness except for his flashing front bike light.   It was like cycling on a country road under the stars, except there was a metropolis in the distance.

     Tibbs retraced his path until he was at the Lachine Canal.   Another decision point.   Unto the Old Port.   There the hermit cycling came to an abrupt end.   The Old Port had been invaded by young people to see and be seen.    It must have been a social media happening.   Not a restaurant, not a shop was open.   It was like a huge petri dish for the pandemic.

     Tibbs returned home by way of downtown which was eerily quiet.


     Tibbs a fait du vélo jusqu’à la rivière après le coucher du soleil vendredi soir.   Il a commencé à l’île des Soeurs.   Il a ensuite pris le pont cyclable de l’estacade jusqu’à la Voie Maritime du Saint-Laurent.   Là, il a été déçu.   La route le long de la voie maritime jusqu’aux écluses de Saint-Lambert a été bloquée pour la construction.   Il a decidé de tourner vers l’ouest.    Il a fait du vélo quelques kilomètres dans l’obscurité, sauf pour sa lumière de vélo clignotante.   C’était comme faire du vélo sur une route de campagne sous les étoiles, sauf qu’il y avait une métropole pas si loin.

     Tibbs a retracé son chemin jusqu’au canal de Lachine.   Un autre point de décision.   Vers le Vieux-Port alors.   Tout de suite le cyclisme d' un ermite a abruptement pris fin.   Le Vieux-Port avait été envahi par les jeunes.    Il doit avoir été announcé par le média social.   Pas un restaurant, pas un magasin était ouvert.     C’était comme un énorme boîte de  Petri pour la pandémie.

     Tibbs est rentré à la maison par le centre-ville qui était étrangement calme.
